Udružene is a workshop producing entirely hand-knitted and crocheted garments, founded in 2012 by French-Bosnian Nadira Škaljić-Mingasson. Based in Sarajevo, Udružene produces high-quality pieces for international brands and designers. In thirteen years of existence, Udružene has produced nearly 150,000 pieces. Production is carried out by professional knitters trained at Udružene’s three training centres.
Udružene aims to help knitters become more integrated into society, offer them a space for mental relaxation, and preserve the tradition of knitting.
The knitters affiliated with Udružene are the heirs to a long tradition. Trained by Udružene, they attain the status of professional knitters. In doing so, the way their community and family environment view them changes. This change in status benefits everyone.
At the same time, in a country with a painful recent history, knitting also brings psychological benefits. The repetitive motion, the soft and reassuring texture of the wool, the colours, the beauty produced, the need for maximum concentration… all have a calming effect, pushing trauma far away… For many years, knitting has been recognised for its therapeutic qualities.
